60 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...
A much less attractive picture than normal - 5 big ugly guys and no Lindsay. My phone camera stinks! I owe the world an apology for the blurry junk I've been posting the past few weeks. The men in the picture said they felt like they were taking a homecoming court picture - LOL!
Two months until Leadville - can you believe it? Sometimes it feels like we've trained so hard and so long - I am looking forward to finishing the training and getting to the race. On the other hand, I wonder how much better we could get if we had more time to prepare, get in better shape, and lose some more weight.
What a great analogy for life! How often do we catch ourselves wishing for more time to get better prepared or to have all the pieces come together? The truth is that we often have more time than we really needed and the pieces rarely all come together. The amount of 'better shape I could be in' or 'weight I could lose' over the next 6 months could have happened over the previous 6 months.
Gordon and Todd ran some stairs and did some track work. Dave Jessen brought down a crew to the track and was blowing whistles at them to run, then run faster!
I decided to run 40 sets of stairs and then headed up the hill to the gym to play basketball - actually I did pretty well today. Curt, Rick, and Cheech stayed to complete an additional 20 sets for a total of 60 stairs.
I did not make it to the Quad City Triathalon this weekend but I'm very excited for all those who took place in the event. First timers, veterans, professionals, novices - so cool that so many people were out testing themselves and performing so well - awesome work!
I had a great lunch today with my friend Tom Rudbeck at Lunardi's Italian Restaurant. The late Terry Lunardi was close friends with Tom and founded this restaurant adjacent to North Park Mall. I would argue that Lunardi's serves the best Italian food in the Quad Cities. When I arrived at the restaurant I sat in one of the booths against an outer wall. When Tom arrived, he suggested we move to a table behind the bar which had a plaque on the wall above it honoring Terry. I imagine this was the table that Terry usually sat at with Tom and his other friends - I'm really glad we sat there. Terry was a generous soul who was very kind to the Quad City community.
Tom has graciously invited me to his home near Leadville in August. I'm looking forward to the trip. We talked about many topics including work, family, real estate, tax liens, etc. but what was most fun was discussing the topic of attitude and how we have the power to decide how we are going to approach life and how we are going to impact others. I truly believe the quote attributed to Abraham Lincoln "Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be."
I'm working on the details for our upcoming Saturday morning 24 hour run - will post the following and more details over the next couple of days.
****
Rick Fountain and I are running for 24 hours beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday, June 23rd to 7 a.m. Sunday, June 24th. The run will begin on the Bettendorf High School track and end on the Bettendorf High School track. At the track we will run laps, walk laps and climb stairs. We have some road trips scheduled around town throughout the day and night but wanted to be at the track for 12 of the 24 hours so friends could stop by to run with us, hang out with us, give us a hard time, encourage us, sing to us, and anything that will help motivate us to stay strong and complete our goal. Anyone is free to go with us on our off-track ventures too - just realize that we are less certain as to where we will exactly be at any particular time. This will be the most significant run we will do prior to Leadville in August and is a very important part of our training - physically and mentally. We are still finalizing details and would ask you to be understanding of adjustments we may need to make on Saturday but here is the plan we will attempt to execute....
If anyone wants to sign up for blocks (and see when others might be there, feel free to edit the GoogleDocs document below....
