Journey to Leadville - Byrne - June 17, 2012

62 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

A little delayed on the blog. Friday morning Rick and I went on a fairly easy run - starting slow for the first 3 miles and then kicking it in pretty good for the last half of the run. Details can be seen below - basically we ran down to the river and back in Bettendorf.

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/104004235 - Friday morning run with Rick Fountain 6.7 miles.

Friday night we had some people over who are coming to Leadville (or who are family members of those who are coming to Leadville). I thought it would be a good idea to get people together to brief them on what to expect in Leadville and how they can best help us. We had a fun time and I think it was a great session. We talked about the route, brainstormed on supplies to have along, and started working through some coordination about when people are coming out, transportation to Leadville, lodging, and roles people would play. We weren't able to have everyone tonight due to schedule conflicts but I was delighted that my sister Debi, Rick Fountain (his wife Jeannie and daughters Ashley and Kayla), Gordon Staley (his wife Teresa and kids Allison and Keaton), Mike Cavins (his wife Jen and boys John and Matthew), Larry Ratigan (his wife Kris and kids Sydney (sp?) and Nick), Doug Himmelman, Jay Gates, and Tom Waterman. It was good to sit down and map some of the logistics out - I'm so grateful for everyone's willingness to help Rick and I and am very excited for this race!

On Saturday morning we did our 4:30 am run again - Curt Johnston, Rick Fountain and I headed out on the first leg - approximately 9 miles. Pretty balmy to start out - 72 degrees and humid. On the way back we met a little breeze into our faces and it felt good.

I must apologize for the lousy, blurry picture. Either my lens is clouded or the camera in my phone is just getting old - oh well.

This was the group that went out on the 2nd leg of our run - we went a little over 8 miles. Part way into the run the rain started to lightly fall. It gradually became stronger but it felt really good and kept us cool. For quite a bit of this segment I ran with Emily and Jen. I'd like to say we had great conversation but it was me who stole most of the air time. They made the mistake of asking me a few questions about Leadville and before you know it, we were back to the finish - they didn't have much of a chance to get in any words!

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/104005287 - 8.15 miles - 1 hr 20 minutes

This coming week we are going to take it fairly easy - running stairs on Tuesday and a 7 mile run on Thursday morning leading up to our 24 hour run from Saturday, June 23rd at 7 am - Sunday, June 24th at 7 am. I will be posting a schedule of our proposed routes and times at the Bettendorf High School track (we will be starting and ending there). Rick and I would love to have you stop by and run some with us or to say hello. It is going to be a VERY long day/night but it is something we need to do in preparation for August.

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - June 14, 2012

65 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Curt, Rick, Todd, Jake, and Gordon

This morning we met at the Bettendorf High School track for a quick stair workout - 40 sets - before playing basketball. Jake, Todd's son, joined us for a combination of stairs and laps around the track. Impressive for a 10 year old young man.

Last night Rick and I combined a run with some stair work. We ran about 3 miles before knocking out 10 trips up the Jumer's Tower and finishing up with a 1.5 mile run. Starting to get geared up for our 24 hour run a week from this Saturday - more details to follow.

I just finished reading the book "What Though the Odds" - see link below. I referenced Haley's moving commencement speech at Notre Dame last month. Now I can passionately and honestly recommend her book - I had trouble putting it down the further I got into it. It is unfortunate how people have a tendency to see the obstacles and circumstances in their lives as justification for why they don't pursue their passions and their dreams. Life is not easy by any means but when you read about lives like Haley's, you become more aware of how oftentimes we sell ourselves short of our potential. By her own account, Haley discusses, although she was an accomplished athlete prior to her accident, the events that followed the accident have led her to a more rewarding and purpose filled life full of faith, love, and community. As you read about her resolve to overcome what many believed to be "impossible", it inspires you to realize that you too have the opportunity to lead a more fulfilled and joyous life.

67 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Superman Dave Jessen - Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run 2007 finisher - 29:09:51 (I am in the background in the grey shirt behind Dave's wife Deb in the light blue shirt)
This photo is of my buddy Dave in 2007 - completing the Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run with more than 50 minutes to spare! (I'm envious - just kidding - I'm proud of him). I had the honor and pleasure of pacing Dave the last 27 miles of this race. I was tired, but that was nothing compared to what he was going through - having run 73 miles prior to me joining him.

On Saturday morning, Rick and I were the beneficiaries of Dave's generosity - he is the ring leader of the Happy Joe's 8 am Running Club and we were excited to see the beautiful orange jugs of water and gatorade at approximately mile 20 - good time for some refreshment.

I've seen Dave mentor people on the track and working with people at all levels of running (beginners, novices, jackrabbits). He encourages others, builds self-esteem, develops camaraderie and friendships, organizes out of town marathon bus trips, and serves others (e.g. setting up and tearing down water stations) - awesome stuff. At church I think about how God wants us to love, serve, and take care of others. I think Dave is doing exactly what God wants us to do. Dave is an accomplished runner but I believe he derives more satisfaction from helping someone run their first 5K then notching a PR on a marathon. He is a great guy and my life is blessed for knowing him! Thanks Dave!

Met around 4:45 am for a stair workout at Bettendorf High School football stadium. Rick was training for work in Waterloo so we missed seeing him today. Lesson learned - don't take picture with sun in the background - you just have to trust me that these people were there - I didn't photoshop them in.Ran 40 sets of stairs and then headed off to play basketball. It was especially fun since my son Daniel played with us.

Dave Jessen's track group

As we were running, we saw a whole slew of people descending down the hill on to the track. They were led by Dave Jessen, who was carrying a cone. As the others were getting warmed up, Dave ran 150 meters around the track to place the cone there. I never quite figured out what the workout was but it looked like they were alternating between running and jogging between 400 - 600 meters.

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - June 9, 2012

70 days until the Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Beautiful morning for a run. Josiah joined Rick and I for the early shift. After running nearly 9 miles he was headed over to the Race for the Cure - where many of those who run with us on Saturday morning were headed. Rick and I handled the last 3 legs on our own. We even did a little running through the cross country course and a little trail running. We knocked out 29 miles this morning in under 5 hours of running - no land speed records set but it was a very good Leadville pace (maybe even too fast). We were especially grateful to the Saturday Morning Happy Joe's Running Group for the refreshing water and gatorade jugs at the corner of 53rd St and Middle Road.

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - June 7, 2012

72 days until the Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Beautiful run this morning with Rick Fountain and Curt Johnston. Started out slow and easy, finished up with a strong negative split and our last couple miles in the low 7:00 minute mile range and a sub 7:00 minute mile.  3 sets of push ups at the end 30, 20, and 10 (the set of 10 may have been the most difficult!)

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/100685303/?new_route=1

will plan to post route later but we did about 6.75 miles in around 55 minutes.

Taking tomorrow off - have another early class with my group from the Rock Island Arsenal. Planning on going at 4:30 a.m. Saturday morning at Crow Creek Park.

Learned today my dear friend Leslie Wagstaff from Utah is engaged to a wonderful guy named Kent - I'm so happy for her! She is an awesome lady and certainly deserves to have a kind, wonderful person take care of her.

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - June 5, 2012

74 days until the Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run....

Correction to last blog - I inaccurately stated that Aaron Maurer stopped running after the first 10 mile loop - sorry bud. It's hard enough to keep running - not so nice when someone else publicly posts that you stopped running :o)

Secondly, I admit I'm a liar. I said I was going to run stairs at 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday - didn't happen. Monday night I knew I needed to stay up much of the night prepping for my class on Tuesday morning so I traded the morning workout in for an evening workout - nice change of pace. My body appreciated the sleep and my body seems more awake at night. There are still many advantages to working out in the morning and I plan to go back to it. Today I also opted to prep for my class more and plan to go running later tonight. I might be able to get back at it tomorrow morning - we'll see.

72 sets of stairs at the Bettendorf High School football stadium (pics forthcoming). Rick Fountain, Curt Johnston and I were there. I was pleasantly surprised when my son Michael showed up - he ran 21 sets with us before doing some strides around the track. Michael ran the stairs strong - it was cool!

75 days until the Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Been off the blog a few days - partly from being busy and partly because I didn't do a whole lot of working out the last few days :o)

Friday morning Rick and I did a few sprints around the track before I played basketball

400 M  1 min 17 sec  200 M walk
200 M  33 sec 100 M walk

The Saturday morning 4:30 am crew listed above. We ran a good steady pace and made it out to the end of Indiana Avenue north of Interstate 80. I didn't have a watch but we must have had a really good negative split because we went longer than half the time out, walked for a bit before we started running, and finished several minutes before 6 a.m.  I originally planned to run a few more miles but changed my mind and left the group - Joe had a baseball game at 8 a.m. Other than Chad, everyone else ran some more.

Josiah, John O, Jen, John B, Aaron, Chad, Jay, Ben, and Rick - Phil - photographer

Michelle Russell, Michael Byrne, and Jim Russell

This, in addition to Phil, and minus Chad and I, continued on for more miles. A very nice morning for a run.

The best part of the day took place on Saturday night. My son Michael entered the boy's division of the Live Uncommon Obstacle Race and finished in 4th place, one spot out of the money! However, he was selected as one of the essay winners for the Live Uncommon Essay Contest and has $1,000 to apply toward his studies at St. Ambrose University next fall. This ceremony took place after the Torchlight Parade, where several hundred people donned headlights as they walked and ran along the Mississippi River through Bettendorf and Davenport. I'm really proud of Michael - he has truly lived an Uncommon Life in a very good way and I'm very grateful to Live Uncommon for appreciating the good things he brings to this world. I decided to take off Sunday from running and subsequently Monday :o)

Tuesday morning I'll be back at the stairs at 4:30 a.m. at Bettendorf High School. I'm teaching class Tues - Friday beginning at 7 am so the workouts need to happen earlier this week.

Until my next post, have a great day! DIG DEEP!
