Journey to Leadville - Byrne - February 29, 2012

171 days until the Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Add caption
Happy Leap Year! There is only 1 opportunity to work out on this day every four years so we decided to take advantage of it :o) Today was a stair day at the Bettendorf High School. Rick picked me up at my house around 5:20 a.m. We started a little late, thinking maybe we were going to be joined by a 3rd person. Unfortunately they didn't show :o( We did 62 sets in total - 5 sets of 10 and a 6th set of 12. Not much different from last week except I believe we did it about 5 minutes faster! I may start keeping track of our times on stair workouts, although I don't think it is as important how fast we go as much as it is that we get it done and avoid injury.

I plan to completely taper 2 weeks before the race, which would be August 4th. While it is 171 days until the race it means that I am down to 157 days in which to do training with. I need to make the most of this time.

Looking ahead to the weekend, planning on a 3 hour run beginning at 4:30 am run from my house in Bettendorf. We'll loop back to the house at 6:00 am for a brief refuel and be finished by 7:30 am. Part of me wanted to do a longer run this weekend but other family commitments makes this option a better one for this weekend :o) I think we've made some significant progress when it feels like a 3 hour run is a 'short' weekend run.

Until my next post, have a great day!  DIG DEEP!

172 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Treadmill at Bettendorf YMCA at incline of 12.0

Rick Fountain (black long sleeve shirt) and I near end of treadmill workout - the blurred picture is not because we were moving too fast!)
Planning to upload a few live pictures from this morning later today. My daughter Katie is my technical specialist. I take pictures with my phone, send them to her IPOD, she emails them to me, I save them to my desktop, and then pull them onto the blog. How is that for efficiency?  If I would learn technology better I could probably do this easier and by myself but for now it is working :o)

Today was a power walking day on the treadmill - busted through another wall! Rick and I only did the first workout listed below - just providing a little historical perspective over the past 6 weeks for incline treadmill work. Definitely more difficult than last week and overall I believe the hardest workout to date, especially considering the increase in incline over the final 30 minutes. I am confident that we will NOT be walking up Hope Pass or Powerline at this pace but this type of training has to be making us better, stronger, and mentally tougher. About 40 minutes into the workout we were wondering when Uhde and Maurer were going to come by and pick us up after the 6 b4 6 group finished. They must have had alternate plans today. As much as we enjoy seeing them, it was good for us to power through.  The more obstacles we face and have to fight through, the more we will be mentally strong on the big day.

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - February 26, 2012

174 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run....

another friend - mp3 player
Mine looks a little different but it is similar to this. I had a really good run today - 31.65 miles in 5 hrs and 2 minutes of running. Rick Fountain ran the last 17.9 miles with me today - he wasn't feeling well early in the morning. Most friends would not run 17.9 miles if they weren't feeling well but if you know Rick, you wouldn't be surprised.

I started at 4:38 am this morning, a little later than I had planned but nonetheless a good, early start. For the first 2 hrs and 22 minutes I listened to my mp3 player. I haven't really used this in the past because I've had great company to visit with. But since I was alone I thought I would enjoy some music while I was running - and I did! A mix of a lot of different types of music from upbeat rock - 'Already Gone' - Eagles and 'Working for the Weekend' - LoverBoy to softer pop 'September' - Earth, Wind & Fire and 'Top of the World' - Carpenters to Christian Music 'Voice of Truth' - Casting Crowns. I listened to many more songs than what I've listed - just wanted to give you a sampling. I love listening to 'Theme from Rocky' and 'Theme from Superman' - gives me a little extra kick. I will have my mp3 fully loaded at Leadville - it motiviates me to run faster and longer.

My legs did start feeling tired after about 12 miles but that is to be expected. I was happy with my pace and the ability to keep moving forward - I know I have to do this at Leadville - so I have a "no whining policy" during training. Body feels good, no injuries, legs feeling like they've run about 50 miles this weekend - which they did :o)  I'm taking tomorrow off and am very happy to have the rest.

Until my next post, have a great day! DIG DEEP!

175 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

cold, dark, windy, snowy morning

When I googled "cold, dark, windy, snowy morning', this is what popped up. There appear to be some simliarities to this picture and what it looked like outside this morning. The temperature wasn't too bad (high teens/low twenties but the wind was acting up a bit and made it feel much colder. When I send the email out during the week to about 40 or more on my list (send me an email if you want to be on this list), once in a while someone will respond that they are coming or not coming but quite often it is a pleasant surprise. This morning we knew my student from St. Ambrose, Lindsay Caes, was going to join us at 4:30 am (she arrived at 4:20 am - how is that for discipline?). We were also joined by Aaron Maurer, Chad Uhde, and Katie Gaffney. We knocked out 9.6 miles and said goodbye to Lindsay - she did great. We were then joined by Dave Jessen, my Leadville buddy whom I had the honor of pacing in 2007. The six of us ran another 3.2 miles at which time we said goodbye to Aaron, Chad, and Katie. Then Dave, Rick, and I ran another 5.3 miles for a total of 18.1 miles. Maps of the runs are listed below.

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/71118862/?new_route=1 - 9.3 miles - 1 hr 30 min

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/71120026 - 3.2 miles - 29 minutes

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/71121160 - 5.3 miles - 48 minutes

Heading out for 5 1/2 - 6 hrs tomorrow and are not aware of anyone who will be joining us - maybe we'll be surprised  - not expecting it though ;o)

Once again, being with cool people on a dark, cold, windy morning made it enjoyable and inspiring. During Dave's run, I asked him to share his experience with Leadville, thoughts on training, and what he was thinking about during the race. His unique perspective is helping Rick to get his arms around what this great race is all about.

Until my next post, have a great day! DIG DEEP!

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - February 23, 2012

177 miles until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

I thought this might get your attention - it looks delicious! Yesterday I was dropping my 10 year old Joseph off at school and being Ash Wednesday we started talking about what we were going to give up for Lent. Without hardly thinking, I said, "I'm going to give up all sweets for Lent - no cookies, candy, cake, or ice cream." As soon as I said it, I started thinking, "Oh man, did I really want to do that?"
Regardless, I said it and it was a 'Done Deal'. I made it through the day without eating any sweets and I only have 39 more to go :o) Ironically there was a large piece of chocolate cake left over after dinner last night that I stared down and watch Joseph consume but I stayed faithful to my commitment.

It made me think that sometimes the most difficult part of executing a plan is making a commitment to the plan. Don't misinterpret this to mean that following through is a piece of cake (pun intended) - it isn't. On the other hand, I KNOW I will honor this commitment. I made it to God for Lent and I made it in front of my son - I feel an obligation to keep my word. Now Joseph has egged me on a bit (and I expect will for the next 39 days) - offering me a taste of several different desserts last night - the little turkey. There is something about a 5th child - much bolder and more streetwise than his older 4 siblings when they were his age.

I've also taken advantage of the accountability lever that comes with going public with a commitment. I think I'm strong enough to resist sweets but putting it on this blog and sharing it with my family and others has sealed the deal. If I were to eat some sweets during Lent, I'd feel horrible. I don't want to lose credibility that I have worked so hard to establish. What are the other areas in our life that we want to make improvements on? What types of commitments can we make and share with others so that we will follow through with our plans?

The long runs for this weekend are already in place and we will get them done but there is power in sharing what we are doing with others. We need to keep to our starting times and loop around times in case somebody shows up - it keeps us on track. Absent of some horrible weather - dangerous ice, super freezing cold, or blizzard like snow conditions, we WILL be running. I've already heard back from several who will be joining us - it is motivating to me to think that they want to join us!

This morning's workout with Rick Fountain was our standard fare of stairs at Bettendorf High School football stadium. We knocked out 61 sets in under an hour. 5 sets of 10 and a 6th set of 11. It was a good day and it feels like our leg muscles have fully adapted to this regimen. 60 steps isn't necessarily easy but it isn't really that hard anymore - I don't believe we would have said that 4-5 months ago.

Until my next post, have a great day! DIG DEEP!

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - February 21, 2012

179 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Cooper's Hill, Gloucestershire
Ok, I don't even think Hope Pass is this steep. But this is why we are doing all of this powerwalking on the treadmill every week. It is less than 6 months from the Big Day! Our training has crossed over the half way point (I think it was February 17th) from starting on September 1 and officially ending on August 4th - 2 weeks prior to the race. The last two weeks will be an extreme taper, some easy runs, hikes in the mountains, camping in the mountains. On the one hand it feels great to have over 1/2 of the training in the books and I am proud of how hard we have worked. If I could turn the clock back,  I don't really feel like I would have changed the training we have done. We have mixed it up, we have worked hard, we have gradually improved, and we avoided injury!

Today's workout was power walking on the treadmill - another breakthrough day in some respects.

0 - 30 minutes   Incline 12.0   Level 4.1
30 - 35 minutes Incline 12.5   Level 4.1
35 - 40 minutes Incline 13.0   Level 4.1
40 - 45 minutes Inlcine 13.5   Level 4.1
45 - 50 minutes Inlcine 14.0   Level 4.1
50 - 55 minutes Inlcine 14.5   Level 4.1
55 - 60 minutes Inlcine 15.0   Level 4.1

It felt good again to execute the plan we had set forth. We were able to get stronger every 5 minutes following the 30 minute mark.

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - February 20, 2012

180 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run....

Good to be back on the blog although I can't complain at all about being gone for three days - I had a wonderful experience away at my Christian retreat - I plan to come back and write more tonight. If not, I'll try to cover it tomorrow.  So there are two things we need to cover here.

#1 - Following up from last Wednesday.... I mentioned that I ran 75 sets of stairs with Rick Fountain on Wednesday morning - that is typical for a Wednesday morning workout. What I didn't tell you is that I went back to do 125 more sets of stairs for a total of 200 on Wednesday. The reason I did it was to honor the men that I was about to spend the weekend with. It was a gift I wanted to give those guys who were aspiring to increase their faith life and get closer to God - I was trying to push myself beyond what I normally do to provide spiritual support for their journey. It must have worked because we had an incredible weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed it; however, I know that it was a life changing experience for many of these guys who had grown away from the church or were finding that their faith was not as strong as they would have liked it to have been. The previous high mark that I had on the steps was 110 sets so the jump from 110 to 200 was, I felt, significant. It was hard, but hard felt good, and I know I had some spiritual support from up above in helping me to finish. it was a great day!

#2 - Today's workout. As I mentioned previously, I took Saturday and Sunday off for my retreat. I had arranged with Rick beforehand to meet at 5 a.m. at the Y on Monday - we never even texted Sunday night - we knew each other would be there. I'm happy to report that we had another breakthrough day - I LOVE BREAKTHROUGH DAYS!!! It is such a good feeling to do more than we have ever done before.. The drill was pretty simple on paper - a little harder to execute.

1/2 mile warm up run
60 minutes on the treadmill, Level 10.0, 0 incline - 2 minutes on, 1 minute off - except for the final set in which there was a 3 minute run and zero walking. If this is confusing....

0-57 minutes Level 10, Incline 0, 2 minutes running, 1 minute resting
57-60 minutes, Level 10, Incline 0, 3 minutes running.
Total Running - 41 minutes; Total Resting - 19 minutes

Finished with 3 sets of 8 on the benchpress at 170 lbs. - we continue to improve each time on the benchpress as well.

Analyzing the run a bit, total run time was 41 minutes, a 20 second improvement over my previous best of 40 minutes, 40 seconds. Earlier I did an hour long variation of this where I was running 2:10 and walking :50 for the first 30 minutes but had to slow down to 2:00 run/1:00 rest and then 1:50 run/1:10 rest. Didn't start out as strong but finished stronger and feeling really good about this workout. Certainly was feeling challenged but Rick's continued encouragement kept me going - thanks Rick!

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - February 17, 2012

183 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Nothing seems very hard when you think about the picture above. I'm heading to my CEW (Christian Experience Weekend retreat) later this afternoon so will be without blog for several days - I won't be running either :o)

Rick and I met at the Y this morning at 5:15 a.m. We knocked out 3 sets of 8 on the benchpress at 170 lbs. Weightlifting is not our main focus right now but we take 10-12 minutes or so a couple times a week to keep building back up. Last year I was attempting to bench press 300 lbs and couldn't break through the 275 lb barrier. Bummed out at the time but I'll get back to it - the goal wasn't meant to be realized in 2011 - maybe it wants to be achieved in 2013. On the back burner but not off the stove! It is encouraging how our bodies are adapting back to the bench press and we seem to be able to add weight and increase reps on a consistent basis.

Afterwards we took off for a 2 hr run - broke it up into 2 segments. Segment 1 was a 5.25 run down to the Misssissippi River and back (43 minutes).

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/69583638

We refueled at the Y, looked to see if anyone was going to join us (nobody was) so we took off on a 1 hr and 13 minute run north of town and back (8.52 miles).

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/69584250/?new_route=1

In total we were able to finish with 13.77 miles in 1 hr and 56 minutes. It was a good run, temperatures were nice, and we had some great conversation about Leadville - I was telling Rick about all the points where crew members and pacers could access the runners. It is fun to reminisce about this awesome race and it sure helped to pass the time.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - February 15, 2012

185 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Colorado Rocky Mountains - awesome!

More detail on today's workout next Monday - sorry I can't tell too much today but I need to keep it to myself for a few days. Today was a stairs day at the Bettendorf High School football stadium - Rick and I knocked out 75 sets this morning. 6 sets of 10 and 1 set of 15 - all in about an hour. Rick is getting better and stronger every week - today he did all 75 sets two at a time. It makes the climbs go faster but it is more pressure and stress on the quads and calf muscles. With each passing week we seem to be getting better and stronger on the stairs - I know it is going to pay BIG dividends when it comes to Leadville.

Until my next post, have a great day! DIG DEEP!

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - February 14, 2012

186 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

What better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than getting up in the morning and pushing your heart to near exhaustion!  Today was a really good day - Rick and I accomplished a lot; however, I also realize and am humbled by the fact that I am not 'there' yes and will need to keep working hard if I want to achieve my goal. Below are listed the last 4 week's power walking treadmill workouts.

Time          February 14th               February 7th               January 31st                January 24th

0-30 min     Level 4.2 Incline 13.0    Level 4.2 Incline 12.0    Level 4.0  Incline 12.0   Level 3.7  Incline 12.0
30-35 min   Level 4.3 Incline 13.0    Level 4.3 incline 12.0    Level 4.0  Incline 12.5   Level 3.8  Incline 12.0
35-40 min   Level 4.4 Incline 13.0    Level 4.3 Incline 12.5    Level 4.0  Incline 13.0   Level 3.9  Incline 12.0
40-45 min   Level 4.4 Incline 13.0    Level 4.4 Incline 12.5    Level 4.0  Incline 13.5   Level 4.0  Incline 12.0
45-50 min   Level 4.4 Incline 13.0    Level 4.4 Incline 13.0    Level 4.1  Incline 13.5   Level 4.0  Incline 12.5

55-60 min   Level 4.4 Incline 13.0    Level 4.5 Incline 13.5    Level 4.3  Incline 13.5   Level 4.0  Incline 13.5

Wrapped up with 3 sets 10 on the benchpress at 165 lbs.

The first piece of good news is that we did our entire hour again with no rest! Now we did check our heart rates at each 5 minute increment starting at 30 minutes. While we kept walking, it was easier to hold onto the bar. It took 50 seconds for the machine to read my heart rate.

The second piece of good news is that we started this week at 1% higher on the incline. In retrospect, I wish we would have started at an incline of 12.5 instead of 13.0. So in a matter of 4 week's time, we did our first 30 minutes .5 mph faster and a 1% increase on the incline than 4 weeks ago - that's exciting!

The third piece of good news is that up to 45 minutes, it is the best we have ever performed on a treadmill. I am very proud of that - it was a lot of hard work!

The fourth piece of good news was Chad Uhde stopping by to see as after his '6 b4 6 run' (6 miles in before 6 am) with his Crazies group. We were struggling to continue going and he provided some much welcomed distraction.

The fifth piece of good news is that we hung in there and fought this to the end without dropping off. That may have been the most important part of the workout - continuing to battle when we were feeling fatigued. I know this 'mental toughness' will serve us well at Leadville this summer.

The bad news - not so bad really... I was disappointed at not feeling able to increase difficulty at 45, 50, and 55 minutes like we had been doing. Of course I wanted to crank it up some more at 45 minutes but I was feeling lucky to continue at the pace we were going. We finished the workout below last week for the final 10 minutes - bums me out on the one hand. On the other hand, we were kicking it in higher gear for the first 45 minutes and I need to appreciate that it was taking its toll on our bodies.

When I think about the treadmill (when I'm off it) it seems that a .5 incline increase or a .1 increase in speed is not that big of a deal but it's a different story when I'm on it. The 1.0 increase in incline today was much tougher than I anticipated and it zapped my energy more than I thought it would. We have come a long ways though and I am feeling VERY good about our progress. I know we have more hard work to do and we will meet the challenge - we just aren't there yet. I would like to report back sometime in the future that we did 60 consecutive minutes at an incline of 15.0 and a speed of 4.5 - THAT would be awesome!

Aaron Maurer posted a quote on his blog the other day that I absolutely love - maybe it's the farmer in me. I can certainly relate to the message and it has perfect relevance for commitment to working toward a fitness goal.  "If the cows don't get fed, the cows don't get fed. Excuses don't help the matter."

http://www.flickr.com/photos/coffeechug/6870364693/

The farm I worked on as a kid actually didn't have cows - we had pigs. I remember many times in the cold winter when we had to go repair frozen waterers for the pigs when the temperatures were below zero. We would be working in our bare hands (pointless to wear gloves that would only get wet) with ice and eventually really cold water to get them working again (I get the chills just thinking about it). The point is that the hogs needed to have water and we didn't have the luxury of waiting for warmer weather. It needed to be done and we did whatever it took to get it done - end of story.

Tell the people in your life who you care about most that you care about them today - Happy Valentine's Day!

Until my next post, have a great day! DIG DEEP!

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - February 13, 2012

187 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Bettendorf YMCA in the light of day

This morning Rick and I met Julie Soucinek at 4:30 am at the YMCA to go for a 2 hr run. Julie asked on Sunday if we would be willing to go for about 14 miles with her - part of her training plan for the Boston Marathon.  She ended up continuing on for a total of 17.5 miles. I was planning to take a picture of all of us together but we didn't meet back up again so I'll get a picture another time. In the meantime this is what Julie looks like when she isn't running...

We just ran 19.6 miles yesterday for our long weekend run so this wasn't in our game plan but since Julie was looking for some company, we decided to call an audible and join her. If we had not done this we probably would have done some work on the treadmill. During this Leadville training it has become apparent to me the importance of encouragement, camaraderie, and taking care of others. Rick and I have been taken care of by many others - this was a pretty easy one to say "Yes" to.

We ran a pretty good pace, averaging 6.5 miles per hour. No land speed records but a consistent, steady pace that made us mentally and physically strong. One thing we did differently today was not taking any walk breaks up any of the hills - we took a few drink breaks at various times (e.g. 1 hr, 1:15, 1:30) but ran pretty consistently the entire way.  In some ways this felt like a back to back long run weekend with the 19.6 on Sunday and the 13 today.

Probably inclined powerwalk tomorrow on treadmill, Bett HS football stadium steps on Wednesday, a speed treadmill workout on Thursday, and a longer run Friday. Saturday and Sunday are out this weekend - working on my soul with God on a men's retreat :o)

Until my next post, have a great day! DIG DEEP!

188 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Great news on several fronts today!

Figured I should get myself in one of these pictures - otherwise you might think I'm lying about all this running. Tried taking a photo near the LeClaire bridge around 6:30 am but the cold wind killed the battery in my phone - will get a picture of that for a later post. Recharged the phone after stopping back at Rick's and was able to take photos at the end of our 2nd leg of the run.

It was COLD today!!! The temperature wasn't too bad as measured by my vehicles thermostat - around 20 degrees - but the wind was brutal - especially running west and north.

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/68879366      9.6 miles

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/68880144      4.6 miles

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/68881034      5.3 miles

Curt and I met at Rick's house at 5:25 a.m. and hit the road by 5:30 a.m. - right on time! Took off around the golf course, down the hill on Valley Drive, and along the river in LeClaire. Returned on the same route back to Rick's house.

Curt also joined us on the 2nd leg - we went north onto the county roads where we could fully appreciate the blustering winds - made it out to Territorial Road and returned on the same route.

Curt had to get home to get his son to Religious Education so Rick and I went out on the 3rd leg - taking Wisconsin east into LeClaire to 10th St - returned on the same route.

Great runs on a very cold day - we did well :o)  Tough days like these are great for our mental toughness - and of course we did it physically too.

More to follow on the 2nd best part of the day when I get a chance to write more....

This next part has nothing to do with running but made my chest swell a bit. There was an article about my oldest son in the newspaper this morning - p. 1 of the Sports page - it was an article about prominent high school athletes who have chosen not to play sports in college - Daniel was featured as one of the four athletes. He was very thoughtful, eloquent, mature, and typical Daniel. I was really proud of him as an athlete but much more importantly I am proud of his character - what a great kid!

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - February 9, 2012

191 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Today was a great day! It has been a really good winter to train - much of it outside in weather that hasn't been too rough. I've had great people to train and share information with about strategy and nutrition and enjoy fellowship with. Today we were inside going at it on the treadmill. I had 2 workouts in mind and decided to let Rick choose. Workout #1 - Run for 60 minutes on the treadmill at Level 10 - 2 minutes on, 1 minute off. Workout #2 - Run for 60 minutes on the treadmill at Level 8.2 - no rest. These were two workouts I have been thinking we should do but since we could only do one today, we would do what Rick selected. I preferred Workout #1 - thinking that I would appreciate the rest period every two minutes. Rick may have read my mind - so he picked Workout #2!

A couple weeks ago we did run 60 consecutive minutes - 30 minutes at Level 7.9 and 30 minutes at Level 8.2 - with a 1 minute rest in between the two sets. It wasn't easy but we did it and I thought we should try to ratchet it up a bit. I wondered if I could get the entire 60 minutes at 8.2, but I knew for sure that I could do at least 30 minutes at this speed.

I settled into a rhythm and felt pretty focused most of the time. I tried to keep my arms relaxed, my breathing steady, and running in a steady pattern. Physically the hardest part should have been 55 - 60 minutes into the workout. Mentally it was the easiest part because I knew it was almost over and I felt great knowing that the workout was 90% complete. The hardest part for me occurs in the 10 - 25 minute range as I begin to fatigue yet realize I have much more than 50% left. 30 minutes is a magical point to hit - knowing we become ever so closer to the finish with each passing second. Rick and I distract ourselves by calculating how many strides we have completed, how many we have yet to complete, the percentage of the workout that has been completed, the percentage of the workout that we have yet to complete, the number of minutes we have completed, and how many minutes we have yet to complete. Chad Uhde usually comes by about 40 minutes into the workout after he has finished running outside with the Crazies and we make him talk to us for a few minutes to help pass more time. He probably wants to say hi and move on but we ask him questions and make him give us more details on anything he is willing to talk about. When tired on the treadmill we are pretty shameless in making people stay and talk to us for as long as they are willing :o)

After the treadmill workout we knocked out 2 benchpress sets of 12 at 160 lbs.

Upon completion I was happy to feel like I could have kept on going. I don't think I've felt like this before after a hard run for 60 minutes and I really liked that feeling! Level 8.2 equates to a 7:19 minute mile pace - I was pleased to hold this pace for 60 consecutive minutes. I just discovered this treadmill conversion chart which gives an equivalent 'road' speed based on the combination of treadmill speed and treadmill incline %.

http://www.hillrunner.com/training/tmillchart.php

At an incline of 0, which I used, the 7:19 pace translates to a 7:38 mile - bummer :o( That's okay - I'm getting better. I'm happy with today's run although it is a far cry from Christian's consecutive 60 minutes on the treadmill at Level 10 (Christian is on the right with the beard).

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - February 8, 2012

192 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Tom Beck - Bettendorf Y - Early morning  front desk man. Note two things here - first the smile on this man's face. Second, the time on the clock in the background - it is about 5:03 a.m. Normally these two things do not go together for human beings. Every so often in life you meet a person that you are so glad you've come to know - Tom is one of those people for me. . I've had the opportunity to talk to Tom before and after workouts and I am so grateful for his positive approach to people and his attitude toward life. Tom is a very faith filled person and that may well be his biggest secret weapon. He told me once that he loves working at the Y because he is inspired by all of the positive energy that people bring with them while they are working out and trying to improve themselves. I can see his point but to be honest, I find that he inspires me with his continued kindness and upbeat attitude. While the Y is supposed to open at 5 a.m. he shows up around 4 to open it up for those who want to get their workout in a little earlier. (I'm not one of those guys that shows up before 5 a.m. - that is early enough for me!) When I look back on all this training for Leadville, Tom will be one of those guys that I am going to credit with helping me along the way - he is a blessing to everyone who knows him.

Today's workout was on the stairs at the Bettendorf Footall Stadium. Rick and I did 62 trips up - 4 sets of 12 and 1 set of 14. All went well today - good workout!

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - February 7, 2012

193 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

These are our friends at the Y better known as 11 & 12.  We like to get these two because they are right in front of the TV that is tuned to ESPN.  Today was another power incline walking day. Rick and I met a little after 5 am and were into our hour long power walk at 5:18 a.m. Like we did the previous week our goal was to break through another barrier, which I’m proud to say that we did! I believe we would have had much more difficulty doing what we did today 2-3 weeks ago.

Basically we jumped up our initial speed by .2 from 4.0 to 4.2 – perhaps it wasn’t a significant jump but it was an improvement and it meant that with our increases during the last 30 minutes, we worked harder than we did the week before and the week before that. We continue to make very good progress and I’m excited to see where we are several weeks from now. It was a good workout but honestly I’m not sure I was as tired as I was the previous week when we did a workout of less difficulty – could this possibly mean we are starting to get in shape?

Listed below is a comparison of our last 3 weeks of power walking on a steep incline:

Time           February 7th                           January 31st                           January 24th
0-30 min     Level 4.2 Incline 12.0             Level 4.0  Incline 12.0            Level 3.7  Incline 12.0
30-35 min   Level 4.3 incline 12.0             Level 4.0  Incline 12.5            Level 3.8  Incline 12.0
35-40 min   Level 4.3 Incline 12.5             Level 4.0  Incline 13.0            Level 3.9  Incline 12.0
40-45 min   Level 4.4 Incline 12.5             Level 4.0  Incline 13.5            Level 4.0  Incline 12.0
45-50 min   Level 4.4 Incline 13.0             Level 4.1  Incline 13.5            Level 4.0  Incline 12.5
50-55 min   Level 4.5 Incline 13.0             Level 4.2  Incline 13.5            Level 4.0  Incline 13.0
55-60 min   Level 4.5 Incline 13.5             Level 4.3  Incline 13.5            Level 4.0  Incline 13.5

We then wrapped up our day with 3 sets of 10 on the bench press at 160 lbs.

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - February 5, 2012

195 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Fun Superbowl! I love close games!!!! Incredible to think that the Hail Mary pass at the end of the game was almost caught!

                                           My good friend Doug Himmelman.

I met Doug 6 years ago when our sons played baseball together and came to know him better through school activities, coaching together, and doing a lot of training together. Doug is a great guy, has an awesome family with his wife Jody and their boys Johnathan and Carter, is a great role model for me and many others with his relentless desire to do the right thing by God and in the community, and he is a tireless worker - a trait I admire so much in a person. I'm not sure if I've met anyone who is so committed to staying physically active whether it is weightlifting, running, swimming, biking, or cross training. He embodies the spirit of an athlete - often training for a marathon, half-marathon, triathalon, obstacle course run, bench press goal, Leadville, or something else cool.

I had the honor of going to Colorado in 2007 with Doug and his family when he entered the 2009 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run. It was fun sharing my prior knowledge and experiences from Leadville with Doug and training with him. There aren't too many friends you can find who will go run 20, 30, and 40 miles with you - I'm lucky to have a few friends like that.

Doug played football for St. Ambrose University in the mid-late 80's and is a member of the Hall of Fame - although you would never know it by talking to him - he's pretty humble. Doug is an incredibly strong man. Recently he benched 300 lbs - after having completed 74 reps of lighter weights laddering up to 300 lbs! I was blown away when I learned this; on the other hand, it should't surprise me. I know Doug has a goal of hitting 325 - 5 lbs more than he benched in college and I would bet anything that he will achieve it. He knows how to set goals and how to persevere enough to complete them.

Doug is a two time champion of the Himmelman Distance Classic (est 2010) - an annual marathon that occurs in Bettendorf, IA. How many people do you know who have a race named after them and who have won all of its races?

Recently he has had some issues with his hip so he has been joining us on some slow bike rides along side of us while he is getting healed up. I can't put into words how meaningful that is to me to have a friend who is willing to rise early in the morning to spend time with us.

Below are maps of the two legs we ran this morning. Mr. Reliable, Rick Fountain, showed up  ready to go at 5:30 am this morning. Our legs were a little tired and a little sore from yesterday's 20 mile run but we were doing well and know this is the type of training we must continue to put our bodies through. A great lift occurred on the 2nd leg when Doug showed up on the bike to haul our Gatorade and water, provide conversation to motivate us and keep us distracted from thinking about tired legs :o)

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/67876176  9.08 miles

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/67876458/?new_route=1   8.98 miles

Total                                                                                                    18.06 miles

I was really happy with the distance we covered and the pace at which we ran today. I truly felt like we finished quite strong and felt like we could have kept going for a while longer if we wanted to. We didn't plan to go further and I needed to get to church so stopping at 8:30 am worked out just fine and I made it on time :o)

We finished the weekend running a little short of 6 hrs and covering over 37 miles. We take tomorrow off - looking forward to the rest - I think we've earned it :o)

Rick and I talked about our attitude toward running on Sunday when we had just ran 3 hrs on Saturday. If it weren't for Leadville we would not feel so motivated to run Sunday. But since we want to be successful at Leadville, Sunday's workout felt necessary. It didn't really matter if it rained, sleeted, or snowed (we did have beautiful weather though) or if we had plenty of sleep the night before - we were GOING to run this morning.

I joke with Rick that I give our other friends an option as to whether they will join us or whether they want to go 1.5 or 3 hours with us on our 4.5 hour runs - but he does not have an option. In part, it is true - I want him to succeed so badly and know that the harder we work, the less difficult Leadville will be. I feel so good about what we have done to date and I truly believe that we have built an extremely strong base to continue getting better and have a couple of great days when August arrives. We need to keep working though - and our friends have been an instrumental part of us being able to continue working hard and running long.

Weighed in tonight at about 196 lbs - I'm supposed to be at 192 lbs. No big deal but it is time to really get serious about what I'm putting in my body. I've had people ask me what my diet plan is and I'm a little sheepish when I say I really don't have one. As a result, I do tend to eat what is in front of me and what looks good at the moment. While I'm not overweight and can maintain with this heavy workout schedule, I know that I must become disciplined in my diet if I intend to lose 16 more pounds. I'll take some tips on diet if you wish to offer some. I will consciously try to eat more soup for meals and cut out bread and desserts.

When I think about it, the hard part ought to be getting up so early in the morning and putting in the work in that we do - which we have done a great job at. It would seem that getting adequate rest and eating properly should be the easy part. But since it doesn't seem to be for me, I need to buckle down and get to work. This week served as a wake up call for me. I WILL have a good week eating and look forward to reporting better results next weekend.

Until my next post, have a great day! DIG DEEP!

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - February 4, 2012

196 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Great morning! We went running for about 3 hours and covered 19-20 miles - I will finalize once I map out this route. Those who joined us are listed above - Rick Fountain, Mike Thavenet, Katie Gaffney, Chad Uhde, and Curt Johnston. This picture was taken near Interstate 80 north of Bettendorf. We did a 1 hr 40 minute loop as well as a 1 hr 16 minute loop - finishing just short of a 3 hour run. Curt and Mike joined us for the second loop. It was awesome having so many people join us.

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/67874726/?new_route=1  - 10.86 miles

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/67875076/?new_route=1  - 8.98 miles

Total                                                                                                     19.84 miles total

We had some great conversation about improving the quality of one's life by spending time with positive people - I was sure in great company this morning. There is something special about a group of people that are willing to join in a run beginning at 4:33 a.m.

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - February 2, 2012

198 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

February 2 - Happy Groundhog Day! Foggy here today, I'm guessing he won't see his shadow - he doesn't even look like he can see his toes! If I look like him come time for Leadville, I probably won't finish :o)

Great day and bummer day at the same time. The bummer was that my buddy Rick is nursing a sore hip. When I spoke to him last night he told me that he had tweaked his hip playing basketball. I asked how it happened - he replied, "You know what it's like when you go up and you get caught in the rim? I landed funny on the way down and tweaked my hip." I immediately laughed while replying, "No, I don't know what it is like to get caught in the rim!" I wish I did but that isn't a problem I have had to deal with. Nonetheless he thought he'd make it in the morning. This morning I looked at my cell phone just as I was getting ready to leave and it was from Rick saying that his hip was still really sore and he felt like he needed to rest it. I completely agree - it is foolish to run on an injured body - I told him to heal up.

So I was faced with the dilemma as to what to do. In the past, I have gone back to bed. This time I decided to go - I was already ready and we're taking tomorrow off from running as a break before our 3 hour runs on Saturday and Sunday.

Our intended workout was to work hard on the treadmill toward the seemingly unreachable treadmill workout of my friend Christian Robbins who runs 60 minutes on the treadmill at Level 10 nonstop (6 minute mile pace). Today was both an exciting and humbling experience for me. Exciting in that I did better than I ever have before with this type of workout. Humbling because I had to ease up on the last half hour a bit - which increased the admiration I have for what Christian does on a regular basis. I truly appreciate having him to look up to and to keep striving toward this amazing achievement. So here is what I did...

1/2 mile warm up jog
0 - 30 minutes Level 10 - 2:10 on  :50 off
30 - 42 minutes Level 10 - 2:00 on 1:00 off
42 - 60 minutes Level 10 - 1:50 on 1:10 off
3 sets of 8 on the benchpress - 160 lbs

I was beat at the end of this workout! Sweat all over the place - my running shoes were drenched as well as the clothes I was wearing. Small puddles of sweat gathered on pockets of the treadmill machine - would have been a great opportunity for the Bounty company to test the absorption power of its paper towels. I was doing well for 20 minutes and then found it began getting harder. I made up my mind that I wouldn't ease up until I had hit the 30 minute mark. At that point I was adamant about going the entire 60 minutes so I thought it would be wise to back off a bit - giving myself an extra 10 seconds of rest and reducing my run by 10 seconds for the remainder of the workout. I wish I would have run 1 additional set at the 2:00 on 1:00 off pace for 25% of my workout but I wasn't thinking clearly as I actually started the workout 4:00 into the time clock on the treadmill. My fatigue also encouraged me to move to the last run/rest ratio. Once I moved to the final run/rest ratio of 1:50/1:10, I really didn't want to ease up any more. During a few of my rests as I was bent over trying to catch my breath, I'd focus on my Dig Deep bracelet and tell myself this was the time to hang in there and keep going. I did and I feel proud. There certainly is room for improvement but I think I did well today.

The improvements came in a couple areas from our last run like this:
1. I ran for 60 minutes instead of 45 minutes - a 33% increase at a high speed workout - I'll take that anyday
2. For the first 30 minutes I ran 10 seconds longer and rested 10 seconds less than the previous workout - doesn't seem like much but it adds up
3. For the next 12 minutes I matched what we had done last week 2:00 on/1:00 off. No improvement per se but it followed 30 minutes of a higher instensity workout
4. For the remaining 18 minutes I had to scale back but it was still a good workout and I pressed on for an additional 15 minutes.

The treadmill said I burned up over 1100 calories in a time frame of 60 minutes - that made me feel good. I missed having Rick today and I hope his hip recovers soon but it was also good for my mental toughness to be able to go do a hard workout on my own.

Until my next post, have a great day! DIG DEEP!

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - February 1, 2012

199 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

                              The road to Winfield - miles 47 - 52

Anothe picturesque shot of Leadville. This may be the most beautiful race in the world in terms of scenery. Unfortunately between darkness, fatigue, and focusing on the race, I don't think I appreciated its beauty in 2005 as much as I should have. I'll try to enjoy it more this time :o)

The road to Winfield - a deserted ghost town that marks the 50 mile turnaround point. Just coming off Hope Pass, it is a 2.5 mile run along a gravel road to the halfway point and 2.5 miles back to the base of Hope Pass. It sounds like an easy run after coming off a steep mountain but it feels twice as long as it actually is. The 2.5 mile run to Winfield is a gradual uphill and is quite tiring - probably because 47.5 miles preceded it. The run back is a gradual downhill and while it feels good, those good feelings are offset by knowing that the steeper climb up the back side of Hope Pass is waiting...

My training for Leadville 2012 officially began on Sept 1, 2012 - 352 days prior to the race. The half way point is coming up soon - February 24, 2012 to be exact. However, we will substantially taper our training by August 6th - 2 weeks prior to the race. So using August 6th as the date where serious training ends, the half way point will actually be February 17th - only 16 days away - wow!  There have been plenty of times I see my alarm clock before 5 a.m. and I will enjoy those future days when I do sleep in longer (or maybe I'll move on to some other challenge which will keep me rising earlier - who knows?). I do need to get to bed earlier though - an area I can definitely improve on - the body needs rest when it is being physically challenged.

I'm beginning to reflect on approaching the halfway point of our training - just like Winfield is the halfway point at Leadville. I am proud of what we have accomplished and I truly feel like we've accomplished what we set out to do in August. I also know we have a long ways to go - and the tougher half of my training awaits. That's okay because we have prepared ourselves to meet this challenge. The workouts we have been posting lately would have been unthinkable last September.

This morning's workout was our regular stair workout at the Bettendorf High School football stadium. Rick and I pounded out 61 sets of stairs in a little less than an hour - 5 sets of 10 and 1 set of 11 (we usually like to do an extra set during the last round - just to dig deep a little more). I felt really good after this workout - felt like we could have gone much longer if we had time.

Looking to go for a couple 3 hour runs this weekend - 4:30 am from my house on Saturday and 5:00 am on Sunday from either my house or Rick's house. We will loop back after an hour and a half to pick up or drop off anyone who would rather only run 1.5 hours.

Until my next post, have a great day! DIG DEEP!
