79 days until the Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Curt and Rick in the rain
John and Rick

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/98198327/?new_route=1 - 6.75 miles - 1 hr

Curt, Rick, and I met at Curt's house for an hour long run this morning. We had the pleasure of running in the rain today :o)  We've been pretty spoiled the past several weeks with warm and dry weather. The farmers need this rain and it is good for us to run in all sorts of weather so it was a good day. We actually didn't get rained on too much but we were smart enough to have long sleeves, hat, and gloves for the run. Crossed paths with 3 from the 6b46 group (Aaron, Katherine, and Emily) - they were running strong!

Finished up with a pyramid (up and down) of 7 pushups (49 total).

Planning on a 4:30 am run at Crow Creek Park on Saturday morning. I will need to finish before 7 a.m. as my son Joseph has a baseball tournament game that morning.

Until my next post, have a great day!  DIG DEEP!

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - May 30, 2012

80 days until the Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Look for the dry spot...(lower right corner of the t-shirt)
I think Rick called Jumer's and asked them to turn up the heat in the stairwells - man was it hot! A very satisfying morning however - a new high on the stairs - 34 trips (or 306 stories). It was tough but it is done. Legs feeling tired all day but it is a good feeling.

Posting a couple pics and videos that I just received from Friday - I'll also post on Friday's blog.

Until my next post, have a great day! DIG DEEP!

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - May 29, 2012

81 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Beautiful Tuesday morning! After resting for 3 days, it was time to get back into it. Gordon Staley, Todd Hornbuckle, Rick Fountain and I met at the stadium a few minutes after 5 a.m. It was already light out - I think we are done running in the dark this summer for the most part. A good solid day - 71 sets of stairs followed by a pyramid of 10 push ups (55 total).
Todd and Gordon - new record high on stairs

John, Gordon, and Rick - Todd (photographer)

An aside from running, this past weekend was an especially proud weekend for me - my son Michael graduated from Bettendorf High School - what a great kid!

Mom, Michael, Dad
We have been very fortunate to have wonderful children and they all bring special gifts to the world. They are similar in many ways but each has unique qualities that define their existence. Michael has brought much humor, music, compassion, and joy into our home for the past 18 years. I am going to miss him living in our house next fall as he takes up residence as a Bee at St. Ambrose University in the fall. Graduation was a wonderful time for me as a parent to not only see Michael realize the completion of a wonderful experience of his life but also to hear the affirmation others poured on him regarding his kindness, talents, and character. It has been fun reflecting on all he has achieved and I am so excited for his future.

Jumer's Tower tomorrow 5 a.m. :o) - plan is to aim for 34 trips up the stairs - 306 stories - time to break the 300 story barrier.

Until my next post, have a great day!  DIG DEEP!

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - May 25, 2012

85 days until the Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run....

Lots of pictures and more to come....

Yesterday was a HUGE day! 58 miles on our run to West Branch. Rick and I ran 58 miles, Jay Gates ran 48 miles and Lindsay Caes ran around 15 miles. Gordon Staley and Todd Hornbuckle were our heroes - driving by encouraging us, supplying us with Gatorade for the last 20 miles and driving us home from West Branch. What a great day - more to tell when I can get back to this computer after coming back from a graduation party tonight :o)

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/96346597 - 58 miles - 12.5 hours

Rick and I started from my house at 5:03 a.m. and headed through Davenport on Kimberly Rd.  We met up with Lindsay Caes at Harlan's in West Davenport a little before 6:30 am. About 1 mile later Jay Gates joined us near the Davenport West softball complex. Jay's original plan was to bike out about 30 miles and run the remainder with us. His revised plan was to run 48 with us - how cool is that?

Basically we ran Highway 6 for about 52 miles before turning north on a road leading to West Branch. The highway was much busier than I thought it would be but cars were great about going into the far lane to give us room. The weather was absolutely spectacular. The sun was hiding under clouds for much of the day and disappeared for the last hour of our run. We did get some sun and it felt pretty hot from 11 am - 2 pm but no complaints by any means.

We ran most of the way for the first 25 miles - taking some walks toward the tops of hills along the way. We also had a few detours to hit a Casey's (Walcott), Lindsay's house (Durant), and a saloon (Atalissa). We also stopped by a Casey's (Wilton) and a Subway (West Liberty) but those locations were directly on our path. The detours added a couple of miles to our run but they were necessary and worth it to refuel to get cold ice, water, and Gatorades. - more to come later..... - need to go to church :o)

Maurer Street in Wilton, Iowa
Lindsay was gracious enough to share some gatorades, water and ice with us from her home. It was about 6 blocks off our route but well worth the detour. After getting refreshed, she rode on our bike with us through town and bid us farewell.

Found 'Maurer' St (or Rd) in Wilton - thought our friend Aaron Maurer might like it.

Jay and Rick - Wilton
We continued on for another 7 miles to make it to Wilton. The next 2 pictures were taken on the west end of town as we were getting ready to head south  out of town.  It would have been shorter to stay south of town but we needed to refuel with food, water, gatorade, and ice.

Rick and John - West Liberty
Rick and Jay - West Liberty
Rick and Jay - near West Liberty (I think)
As we moved further west, we walked more, it started to heat up, and the stretches seemed longer. We crossed a fairly wide creek that we first thought was the Cedar River only to discover that a few miles later we crossed the 'real' Cedar River. When we reached Atalissa we were looking for a gas station or convenience store to refuel - the only place we could find was a saloon in town. The lady behind the bar was wonderful - giving us ice and water. Other than beer and pop all she had was tea so we opted for the water. We walked for a bit to the edge of town, heading west toward West Liberty. This stretch seemed to go by fairly slowly. It's funny how you can see water towers in the distance and as you get closer to them, they seem to get farther away and then disappear! We knew however, that the more we kept running, we would eventually get there - which is exactly what happened. My experience with long runs also has taught me that one experiences highs and lows. For me personally, coming into West Liberty was a low point. I was feeling overheated and dehydrated - despite feeling like I was drinking a lot of fluids. My feet were beginning to feel hot and a little sore from the pounding they were taking. I had no intentions of quitting, it was just not very pleasant. I also felt like walking more and running less.Once in a while I'd stop to stretch my legs a bit but for the most part, just kept moving forward - that was our mantra - 'one foot in front of the other'. A couple of miles before West Liberty we were welcomed by a most wonderful sight - Todd's black Chevy Tahoe! Todd and Gordon had already been to West Branch for a Mexican lunch and since we were starting to fall behind schedule - they had more time to kill than they probably wanted. They caught up with us about 1 mile east of West Liberty and had plenty of Gatorades in the car - cold and multiple flavors! You have no idea how motivating it was to see these guys. Despite being in an air-conditioned vehicle and looking refreshed, they were a great sight for us. We could have held on for a couple more miles with our fluids but it was a pleasant surprise to say the least. Afterwards Todd commented that we didn't look like we were going to make it so we must have looked pretty bad. Rick and Jay had commented that they weren't feeling too good at the time either.

We rolled into West Liberty and found a Subway. Jay and Rick shared a sandwich - I didn't feel like eating (we had a few Gu's along the way - maybe 3 each?). Once we left West Liberty we were encouraged because our next stop was West Branch - our final destination! The sun seemed to dip behind the clouds for the rest of the day, the breeze seemed to pick up, and we even had a few sprinkles on the way into West Branch.
Rick and John - heading North to West Branch

Rick and John - on way to West Branch

We were greeted several times by Rick's friends, Tigger and Barney, as well as Todd and Gordon. I think they knew we were in need of some emotional support and it was great to see them come by a few times. Maybe they were checking to see whether we had collapsed! Truth be told we probably ran better from West Liberty to West Branch than we did coming into West Liberty.Their encouragement was powerful for us and we appreciated it more than they know.

Eventually we crossed over Interstate 80 and saw our destination! As we entered town it started to rain - no complaints - the wet raindrops felt great. Gordon and Todd were awaiting us across the street from the Jack and Jill grocery store and captured a couple pictures and video at the finish.

Rick and I had 2 goals on Friday and I think we accomplished both of them.

Goal #1 - to finish. We did it, just like we had planned.

Goal #2 - to answer 'yes' to the question.... "Could we keep going?" We both agreed that we could have. We were certainly glad to be finished - we worked hard. But we also know that Leadville is a lot longer and a lot tougher and it would not bode well for us if we didn't feel like we could continue.

Gordon and Todd drove us to Barney's house where we all soaked our legs for a few minutes in cold water followed by a hot shower. After a quick visit with Barney and Tigger, we headed back to the Quad Cities in Todd's vehicle. My original thought was that we would have finished closer to 2:30 pm - which was probably a little naive. We did have some detours which added time. In addition, I forgot that the longer one runs, the slower one gets and the more walking that one needs to mix in with the running. I also feel terrible that Todd had hoped to be back in the Quad Cities around 4:30 pm - I blew that one big time.

All in all, the day was highly successful. A few lessons learned...
We'll hydrate better in the days leading up to a long run.
We'll make sure to use more vaseline to prevent chaffing better.
We may have started off with too fast of a pace.

All of these errors are fixable and it was good to learn them in a training run like this. Rick did amazing and I'm predicting that he will have a successful finish at Leadville. I'm feeling confident about my ability to finish Leadville but in order to go sub 24 hours I will need to keep training hard and lose that extra weight I keep talking about.

Thanks for reading this very long blog but as you can appreciate, there was a lot to talk about on this day :o) Resting Saturday, Sunday and probably Monday. Body is feeling good and strong and ready to get back after it.

Until my next post, have a great day!  DIG DEEP!

88 days until the Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Please read to the very end - you won't regret it :o)

A few things to catch up on....

Gordon, Lindsay, Curt, Rick, and Todd - John photographer
Todd took this picture so my 'glow in the dark shirt could make it in there - the camera immediately broke afterwards :o)

Today (Tuesday) was a stair workout day - 82 trips up the Bettendorf High School football stadium followed by a pyramid of 8 push ups (36 total). Gordon Staley, Curt Johnston, Todd Hornbuckle, Lindsay Caes, Rick Fountain. Beautiful morning!

Taking it easy this week - getting ready for this Friday's run to West Branch. No running Sunday or Monday. Did play basketball Sunday night - it was awesome! No plans to run Wednesday or Thursday either unless the kids want to go out for a few miles.

Saturday was a good run - didn't have time to blog since I was off to Notre Dame to my nephew's graduation - more to come on that later - IT IS WORTH THE READ, trust me!

Katie, Jen, Kurt, John, Rick, Curt - Phil Pancrazio photographer
Katie Gaffney, Curt Johnston, Rick Fountain and I met at 4:30 am to go on the first leg of the run. Wonderful morning for a run...

At 6 am we were joined by Phil, Kurt, and Jen for the second leg of the run...

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/95027935/?new_route=1- 9.75 miles - 1 hr 20 minutes

Ok, now for the best part of this post! On Saturday I heard the BEST commencement address I have ever heard - Haley Scott Demaria, a Notre Dame alum who battled back from a spinal injury to compete intercollegiately in swimming - her message is inspiring and uplifting. I so wanted to find her afterwards and tell her how much her speech meant to me. Someday I will meet her - PLEASE take 15 minutes to listen to this - it is worth it - I guarantee it. What a beautiful and terrific person!

93 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Rick Fountain and Curt Johnston
John Byrne and Curt Johnston
This is the first time in a while when I remember starting a run when it was already light out :o). The temperature in Rick's truck read 49 degrees but there was a bit of cold in the air. Long sleeve shirt worked well - considered gloves but decided against them. Hands were a bit cold but no complaints - MUCH nicer than January and February!  Curt Johnston, Rick Fountain, and I knocked out 7.5 miles in a little under an hour. Started slow and easy - Curt's garmin had us close to 9 minute miles on the way out and sub 8 minute miles on the way back - I love finishing stronger than we start!

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - May 16, 2012

94 days until the Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Rick Fountain and John Byrne
Tough, tough workout today. 32 trips up Jumer's Tower - the most we've ever completed. 288 stories of stairs in about 1 hr 20 min. Rick and I weren't sure how many we would do today but at the beginning Rick said "at least 30". Once we hit 30 I was ready to call it a day. Rick asked what our previous high mark was, I replied "31" - he said "let's do 32". How could I argue with that? So we did a few more.  Floors 7-9 on each climb is tough but we kept plugging away. I know this type of training will be of great value when we are scaling Hope Pass and Sugarloaf Mountain during Leadville. We will benefit from the climbing as well as the experience of pressing on when we are tired. Sometimes I wonder which workouts are our hardest. I'm not sure what to say - they all seem hard to me. The Saturday runs are long but we aren't huffing and puffing. Wednesdays at Jumer's, we are huffing and puffing a LOT at the top of the stairs but we are done in about 1 hr 15 minutes. I think it is good to mix up all these workouts - keeps the body from getting too comfortable :o)

Looking ahead to the weekend, there will be a Saturday run beginning at 4:30 am at Crow Creek Park on Devil's Glen Road. A 2nd loop will take place at 6 a.m. for those of you who like to sleep in :o). At this time I do not know whether there will be a 3rd loop beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Until my next post, have a great day!  DIG DEEP!

95 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

great picture forthcoming....Katie.....

Men of Steel

not our sunrise - but ours was just about as good...
Another awesome day - I feel so energized with the great weather we are having - the light of day is coming earlier each morning. I'm also really happy that a number of good friends are showing up to do this - it is inspiring me! We had a strong force today at the track - Gordon Staley, Todd Hornbuckle, Mike Cavins, Curt Johnston, Rick Fountain, and myself. I have a feeling that Gordon, Todd, and Mike have secretly signed up to run Leadville and aren't telling me - they keep coming every week for the stair workouts! It was a great day - 82 trips up and down the Bettendorf High School football stadium followed by a ladder of push ups with Rick leading - Rick did 1 push up and remained in up position while Curt and I did 1 push up - then 2 & 2, etc. all the way up to 8 - so that ended up being 36 push ups. Tomorrow - Jumer's Tower 5 a.m. for anyone who wishes to join us!

Dave Jessen was running 800's with Julie Soucinek and 3 others while we were climbing stairs - they were all looking very strong. You would never guess Dave has been battling COPD by the way he is running - he is one tough guy!

Rick and I are planning on a run from my house to West Branch, IA on Friday, May 25th - we will probably leave my house at 5 a.m. but that time has not been finalized.  The route can be seen here:

98 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Rick Fountain, Jane Wheeler, and Jay Gates - 6 a.m.
A small group today, which we figured since the Quad City Distance Classic is tomorrow. Rick and I took off at 4:30 am by ourselves. My right leg and ankle were a little sore from basketball yesterday and I debated whether I should run today. I decided to go for it, partly because I had posted that we would do it and I didn't want to let anyone down. We started slow and within 1 mile my leg felt just fine.

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/91881447 - 9 miles

Upon our return to the park for a few minutes before 6 am, Jane Wheeler (and baby), and Jay Gates were ready to go on another long run. It was daylight by this time and the temperatures were perfect. Jane took off strong and was tough to keep up with. It is remarkable to think what she could do if she weren't 20 weeks pregnant. She is very fast!

100 days until the Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

I've been waiting to put up this one! - 100 days left until the BIG day!

a run in the country...
It doesn't look exactly like this but it looks pretty similar - I love running in the country - reminds me of the good ol' days on the farm when I was younger. Ran with Curt Johnston and Rick Fountain today - 7 miles in just under an hour. Started nice and slow, finished faster and stronger at the end. Wrapped up with 2 sets of 31 push ups :o) Nothing spectacular to write about today - just steadily getting after it - feeling strong and healthy. Looking forward to Leadville in August!

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/fullscreen/91158863/ - 7 miles - 59 minutes

Some quick sprints around the track tomorrow before some basketball and planning on a Saturday morning early run - either 4 a.m. or 4:30 a.m. - will only be able to go for 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 hours - busy being a single parent with 4 kids moving in 4 directions :o)

101 days until the Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Amazing to think the training days are trickling away :o)   :o(

My son Michael and I after a 3 mile run! - photographer Joseph Byrne, my 10 year old son
My son Michael asked me after school if I wanted to go for a run with him - how could I say no? It was beautiful weather, although we were sweating beads half way into the run. Michael is planning to run on the cross country team at St. Ambrose this fall and has a slate of summer conditioning workouts he will be completing - I hope to do many of them with him. It sure was a lot easier running with him when he was smaller! We ran a good pace and we really pushed each other. I didn't wear a watch to time it but it felt like we were running 6:30 - 7:00 minute mile pace for about 3.1 miles. I'm counting my blessings that I can still run with him. At some point in the future (we'll see how soon) I probably won't be able to hang with him anymore - a bittersweet thought. I really want to keep running with him but I'm thrilled that he continues to improve :o)

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/90972237/?new_route=1  - 3.1 miles

Jay and Rick on the 'beautiful stairs' leading up from the lower level - not the gray, dingy, enclosed stairs we run :o) - they still look fresh - we had not started yet!

An empty Doritos bag taunting us on our trips up the Tower - I think it was there last week too!

Tough workout! Jumer's Tower is always a killer on the quads - all the more reason to do this weekly. Met at 5 a.m. at Jumer's. Rick Fountain and Jay Gates starred in this week's episode of "How much can your legs take?" - a very long, boring, show that involves continuous climbing up the same two sets of stairs 9 stories high and then riding the elevator back down. We take a quick breather after every 5 sets to grab a drink of water or Rick's high octane lemonade/juice/gatorade. If you aren't fully awake when you take a sip of this stuff you definitely will be afterwards. The strong flavor is good, you just have to be ready for it! Rick needed to go at 6:15 so we agreed we would get in whatever we could - which ended up being 27 trips up the tower.  Actually 27 plus 16 steps - we took the last elevator trip to the lower level instead of the first level and had to climb back up from below. If we had more time I think we would have been on track to hit a new high of 34 - maybe next week...

In some ways this is the hardest workout of the week. Jay said he dreads it on Tuesday night and loves it around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning after we are finished. - LOL.

Tentatively looking at a 4:30 a.m. Saturday morning run but I'm not sure how long I'll be able to run as it's a busy weekend. Joan is out of town, baseball tournament, 2 soccer tournaments, and probably a few other things I'll learn about later :o)

Until my next post, have a great day!  DIG DEEP!

102 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Todd Hornbuckle, Gordon Staley, Chirag, Lindsay Caes, Rick Fountain, Curt Johnston - John Byrne photographer

(missing Mike Cavins from picture - he joined us at the track)

Super cool day! Spectacular weather - the sunlight is showing earlier all the time as we get closer to summer. As you can see (or will see) - we broke our old attendance record - had 8 people today! It was quite awesome looking around and seeing multiple people flying up the stairs and moving around the track. At this point I'm feeling like I can call a number of these people 'regulars' - Curt Johnston, Lindsay Caes, Chirag (I need to get his last name!), Gordon Staley, and Todd Hornbuckle. Rick Fountain is still in his probation period - I'm not sure he has proven himself yet. He's only been training with me steadily for about 2 years and what seems like 2000 miles of running - I'll post notification when he has earned his stripes :o) Today's rookie was Mike Cavins - owner and founder of Uncommon Ground  http://uncommongroundqc.com/ (provider of outstanding landscaping, irrigation, turf, and snow removal services). The primary reason I put my friends' names in this blog is to shame them into joining us for future workouts :o)

Today we started closer to 5 am (actually it was about 5:10 before we started but 15 minutes sooner than normal). The reason for the early start was so we could get more stairs in. Dave Jessen and a couple of his running buddies were running 200 M sprints today - it was great to see them. Today we knocked out 81 sets of stairs. A bunch of people hit new highs today which always makes me feel really good. It's all about the journey and getting a little better each day that makes life great. After we were done, Lindsay had made a batch of protein balls for us. I'll have to admit I wasn't in the mood to eat them after all the stairs but they tasted really good. I'll have to get the recipe but I know there was flaxseed, oats, peanut butter, and other healthy ingredients in there. Thank you Lindsay - you are awesome! Following the stair workout, we did a set of 31 push ups before pulling out of the parking lot. The weather was great, the company was even better :o)

Tomorrow morning - 5 am - we tackle Jumer's Tower - many times over. Text me if you are interested in joining us.  563-343-3909

105 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run....

Picture forthcoming of the 6 am crew compliments of Jen Paul's camera and the photography skills of Mr. Jim Russell... (Jay G, Phil P, Chad U, Jane W, Jen P, Michelle R, Lindsay C, Chirag, Katie G, Rick F, and John B). I do not have an last name initial for Chirag but is that really necessary? He's the only Chirag I've ever met :o)

Awesome, awesome morning for a run! Just Rick and I this morning at 4:30 a.m. We've become a little spoiled in having some others join us for the first leg but today it was just the two of us. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit with Rick - what a smart, humble, and nice person to talk to! On the way out we were feeling pretty good. It didn't feel like we were pushing it but by the time we were 45 minutes out, we only had a few hundred yards until Wells Ferry Rd so we decided to go for it! Ended up running 47 minutes on the way out and 44 minutes on the back for another negative split! We did walk a few times on some of the hills and maintained a total speed just as good as the speed when we run with others and do not talk brief walk breaks - interesting to think about. This stretch was 10 miles.

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/routes/view/89677491 - 10 miles - 1 hr 31 minutes

At 6 am there were 9 others awaiting us at Crow Creek Park - it is one of the coolest sights to see when there are a bunch of cars and a bunch of people waiting to run the second stretch with us - thank you everyone! We had a great run going south and onto the bike path for a total of 8 miles on this segment.

We said goodbye to five of our runners and six of us carried on for a final run north for a 3 mile loop. We ran a good pace on this one as well, experiencing a few hills along the way.  When we came back, Uhde was still there, chatting with Katie's and Michelle's husbands - if he was going to hang around for that long, he should have just run 3 more miles with us!

I'm not sure if I was just feeling well today but I can honestly state that I felt the same level of tiredness at mile 20 that I felt at mile 3. I know that sounds weird but it's true. I think maybe I'm beginning to get in shape :o)

Thanks to Jen Paul for bringing some awesome varieties of Gu gel packets - she even left a bunch for us after finishing her 8 mile run - how sweet of her.

Total distance - 21 miles - a little over 3 hrs of running :o)

Our good friend John O'Brien knocked out over 36 miles in the 24 hr run in Eldridge this weekend - more than 15 miles than what we accomplished today :o)

Rick and I are taking tomorrow off from running because we'll be playing some intense basketball tomorrow night - I can't wait!

Until my next post, have a great day! DIG DEEP!

Journey to Leadville - Byrne - May 4, 2012

107 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Jordan

Bird

West

Johnson

Staley

5 guys you want to take the winning shot at the end of a basketball game. You may remember the first four fairly well from their famed NBA careers but I had the opportunity to witness greatness this morning from the losing team's perspective as Gordon Staley knocked down a 3 pointer to win the final game! Pella better extend his employment contract soon before the NBA comes calling...

No running or climbing today - just basketball :o) My 10 year old (Joe) and Todd's 10 year old (Jake) rose before dawn to shoot baskets at the high school this morning - it was fun having them there. Picture forthcoming.....
Joe Byrne and Jake Hornbuckle - 6:30 a.m.

Running tomorrow at 4:30 am at Crow Creek Park - be there at 4:25 am if you want to be part of the first loop! We'll swing by again at 6 am.

Until my next post, have a great day! DIG DEEP!

Beautiful morning to run - t-shirts and shorts - no gloves, no stocking caps. Good ol' Iowa humidity. Great conversation, run felt good. Afterwards did two sets of 30 push ups. Link to route posted below......

last night the kids wanted to go on a run so Michael, Thomas, Joseph and I grabbed our neighbor Matthew Perk and we did 2.2 miles - it was fun. Joseph has a little motor on him - he was a little tired from 1/2 to 1 mile but he kicked it in the last mile - pretty impressive. I forget how short his legs are and we probably went out too fast. Thomas wanted to challenge Michael a few times but Michael wouldn't let him get ahead - the older brother psychological factor - I love it! Matthew tried to catch Michael at the end but wasn't able to either. I hope to do a lot more of these runs with the kids over the next few months. They aren't interested in runs more than a few miles but it is a fun time to get out with them. I believe Michael is going to run cross country for St. Ambrose next fall - that should be a fun experience for him.

It was lightning this morning but who cares! (more to come later) - we were climbing stairs at Jumer's Tower. Jay joined Rick and I at 5:05 a.m. We weren't sure how many we would do today but sort of figured it would be a minimum of 25. As we started moving through, Jay said we should do at least 30 since that is what we did last week. He received no arguments from Rick or I. Around 25 we decided that we would do 31 to beat our old record. So that's what we did - 279 stories - almost 3 times up the John Hancock Tower in Chicago! We finished out with 31 push ups to commemorate our 31 trips up Jumer's Tower.

Until my next post, have a great day! DIG DEEP!
