Journey to Leadville - Byrne - May 29, 2012

81 days until the 2012 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run...

Beautiful Tuesday morning! After resting for 3 days, it was time to get back into it. Gordon Staley, Todd Hornbuckle, Rick Fountain and I met at the stadium a few minutes after 5 a.m. It was already light out - I think we are done running in the dark this summer for the most part. A good solid day - 71 sets of stairs followed by a pyramid of 10 push ups (55 total).

An aside from running, this past weekend was an especially proud weekend for me - my son Michael graduated from Bettendorf High School - what a great kid!

Mom, Michael, Dad
We have been very fortunate to have wonderful children and they all bring special gifts to the world. They are similar in many ways but each has unique qualities that define their existence. Michael has brought much humor, music, compassion, and joy into our home for the past 18 years. I am going to miss him living in our house next fall as he takes up residence as a Bee at St. Ambrose University in the fall. Graduation was a wonderful time for me as a parent to not only see Michael realize the completion of a wonderful experience of his life but also to hear the affirmation others poured on him regarding his kindness, talents, and character. It has been fun reflecting on all he has achieved and I am so excited for his future.

Jumer's Tower tomorrow 5 a.m. :o) - plan is to aim for 34 trips up the stairs - 306 stories - time to break the 300 story barrier.

Until my next post, have a great day!  DIG DEEP!

You always talk about running "up" the stairs....do you ever concentrate on running down them....? eccentric contractions are very important in endurance running, especially at Leadville....

Good morning Art. On Tuesdays we run up the stadium stairs (estimating 85% of maximum speed) and on the way back down I'd say we jog back down (estimating 65% of maximum speed). The steps are fairly close together and in the interest of safety I'm not sure it is wise to run down as fast as possible. On Wednesdays we run up the stairs in the hotel tower but take the elevator back down - mainly because it is quicker to ride down than to jog down the stairs. I appreciate your comment on the importance of managing the run downhill - it can wreak much havoc on the quads and knees. I hope all is going well with you - thanks for taking the time to comment on the blog! Have a great day!
